Titta Kuisma. Artist & Healer. Art is a way of life for her and her paintings are a manifestation and reflection of her subjective thoughts and myriad life experiences, including the experience of violence and extreme trauma.

In this connection, Creativity has been one of the foremost and pivotal elements in Titta’s life. As the artist reiterates in her own words in her moving article ‘Behind the smile’, which was penned by her a few years earlier: “I want to give my voice and my face to represent all those women and girls, who have faced violence in their lives and I call us ‘Survivors’. I want to empower, especially those women and girls who are voiceless, powerless, scared and ashamed to talk about it. Terrific actions of violence should never be taboo or shameful for the victims, whether it is physical or mental.

The latest UN report indicates that every third woman has faced violence, and many cases remain hidden. Unfortunately, due to traumatic events, experiences of violence in any form are still shameful for many victims. I truly understand it, as it took me nearly 20 years to be strong enough to open up and to create solutions to unlock traumatic memory attacks. From my own life experience, I know the journey well. People who have experienced traumatic events are highly resilient and develop appropriate coping strategies mostly by themselves. Like me, I didn’t show my pain to others, but it was limiting my life in different ways…
